Why MahaDevi
Yagé has been practiced in Putumayo for generations. This is where it comes from. This is where we are.
Putumayo
The Inga, Camsá, Kofán and Siona peoples have held Yagé ceremonies here for generations. The plants grow here. The lineages began here. The songs were composed here. When you come to MahaDevi, you come to the source.
Two Medicines, One Place
MahaDevi offers both fire-brewed Yagé and the rare Crudo, a suitable choice for beginners and those with a sensitive nervous system. Crudo cannot be transported. It does not exist outside Putumayo.
12 Generations of Living Lineage
Ceremonies led by Taita Miguel Mavisoy of the Camsá tribe, whose lineage spans twelve unbroken generations. His sweet-tasting medicine is well known in Colombia and abroad.
Fresh Medicine.
No Paste. No Compromise.
Taita Miguel grows and harvests the Yagé-Ayahuasca on his own land in Putumayo. Every batch is prepared fresh in the days before your retreat. No importing, no paste, no months-old medicine. You connect with something that was made with intention for you.
Freshness is not a luxury at MahaDevi, it is the standard.
Crudo: Colombia's Cold-Brew
Crudo is a raw preparation of Yagé made without fire. The ayahuasca vine is harvested, scraped and chopped by hand. The medicine is consumed within 2 days of making it, as it ferments quickly and cannot be stored or transported. It does not exist outside Colombia.
For people who are sensitive to plant medicine, or who are trying ayahuasca for the first time, Crudo is often a gentler starting point. The taste is mild, much closer to vegetable juice than the strong bitterness of cooked brew. It is gentler on digestion, easier on the stomach, and many people find the quality of experience cleaner and clearer.
At MahaDevi you have a choice. We offer both traditionally cooked Yagé and Crudo, and we prepare both fresh for every retreat.
If this is your first time, or if you have a sensitive system, we recommend Crudo. The taste is mild, it is easier on the body, and most people find the quality of experience clean and clear. It is a gentler way in, without being any less real.
If you have worked with ayahuasca before and feel called to the cooked brew, that is available too. The decision is made together with Taita Miguel based on your constitution, your intention, and what the ceremony calls for.
| Aspect | Crudo | Cooked Yagé |
|---|---|---|
| Preparation | No fire. Scraped and chopped by hand | Slow-brewed over fire, many hours |
| Taste | Mild, closer to water or vegetable juice | Strong, bitter, dense |
| Body effect | Lighter on digestion and stomach | Often physically demanding |
| For beginners | Ideal, gentler entry point | Common but can feel intense |
| Where it exists | Colombia only. Cannot be transported | Available at retreats worldwide |
| Freshness | Must be consumed within days of making | Can be stored; often arrives as dried paste |

A Week Designed to Take You Somewhere New
Every day at MahaDevi has a purpose. Rest when the medicine asks you to rest. Go inward when it is time to go inward. Walk into the highland Amazon when the forest calls you out.
Each day is structured so you never have to think about what comes next. Your only job is to show up.
Taita Miguel Mavisoy and the MahaDevi Team
Our ceremonies are led by Taita Miguel Mavisoy of the Camsá tribe, whose lineage spans twelve unbroken generations. He received Yagé for the first time at six months old, guided by his parents, who are both respected healers in the Camsá lineage. Miguel became a Taita and started serving ayahuasca by age 14.
Each retreat is also joined by other medicine men and women from the Inga, Kofán and Siona traditions, who take part in ceremonies alongside Taita Miguel. The ceremonies are led from the Camsá lineage, held within a space that draws from the broader indigenous traditions of Putumayo.
The MahaDevi team includes Yasha, our founder, who holds the safety framework and logistics for every retreat, and Ania, our lead facilitator and head of integration, who provides the structured support you carry home.

Why Putumayo, and Why It Matters
Not all ayahuasca retreats in Colombia are equal. Putumayo is the traditional heartland of Yagé. The Inga, Camsá, Kofán and Siona people have held these ceremonies here for generations. The plants are grown here. The lineages began here. The songs were composed here.
When you travel to MahaDevi, you are not visiting a retreat that adapted these traditions from somewhere else. You are arriving at the living landscape with its own intelligence, its own rhythms, and its own medicine.
The Spirit of the Amazon
The scarlet macaw has long been associated with the spiritual life of Amazonian indigenous communities. In Putumayo, it is a living symbol of the ecosystem that makes this work possible: the jungle that grows the medicine, holds the ceremonies, and has shaped these traditions for generations.
When you come to MahaDevi, you are not just attending a retreat. You are arriving into a living landscape with its own intelligence, its own rhythms, and its own medicine.

Common Questions About Ayahuasca Retreats
- What is an ayahuasca retreat?
- An ayahuasca retreat is a structured, multi-day program led by indigenous healers and experienced facilitators in which participants work with Ayahuasca (Yagé) in ceremonial settings. A legitimate retreat includes medical screening, preparation guidance, ceremony nights, and post-retreat integration support. MahaDevi retreats run 7 nights and 8 days and include 3 Yagé ceremonies, an optional 4th using Crudo, and 30 days of integration support.
- How much does an ayahuasca retreat in Colombia cost?
- MahaDevi retreats start from $2,200 USD for shared accommodation, including all meals, 3 ceremonies, two-way airport transportation, preparation support, and 30 days post-retreat integration. Full pricing is on the retreats page.
- Is ayahuasca legal in Colombia?
- Yes. Colombia has never prohibited Yagé. There is no legislation restricting its ceremonial use, and the Colombian government has provided institutional recognition of its cultural significance in indigenous practice. MahaDevi operates in a fully legal framework; no exemptions, no gray areas, no legal risk for participants.
- What is Crudo and who is it for?
- Crudo is a cold-brew preparation of Yagé, made without fire, using fresh plants harvested and consumed the same day. The taste is mild, much closer to water than the bitterness of cooked brew. It is gentler on the body and digestion, making it especially good for sensitive people and first-timers. Crudo ferments quickly therefore cannot leave Colombia. MahaDevi offers both Crudo and traditionally cooked Yagé.
- What is a Medicine Maker retreat?
- On select MahaDevi retreat dates, participants learn alongside Taita Miguel how to prepare Crudo ayahuasca. From technique, the plants, the process, to the traditions behind it, you learn directly from Taita. The medicine you prepared, you then get to experience in ceremony. Contact us for available dates.
- How long is the retreat and what is included?
- MahaDevi retreats are 7 nights and 8 days. Included: 3 Yagé ceremonies with Taita Miguel, an optional 4th Crudo ceremony, all meals, accommodation, two-way airport transportation, Fin del Mundo waterfall hike, Breathwork, Hapeh, Sananga and Cacao ceremonies, local market visit, 14-30 days preparation support, and 30 days post-retreat integration.
- Is MahaDevi suitable for first-time participants?
- Yes. MahaDevi is one of the only centers offering Crudo Yagé; a gentler, milder-tasting ayahuasca that is well-suited to first-timers and sensitive people. Groups are capped at 10-12 people. Every participant goes through a comprehensive medical and psychiatric screening before acceptance, with a 1:2 staff-to-participant ratio in ceremonies.
Ready to Take the Next Step?
We keep groups small to ensure the highest standard of care. Check upcoming dates or speak with a guide to see if MahaDevi is the right path for you.
